The XX (Digipak Analysis)

CHARACTERS
There are no specific stars or characters shown on or within the digipak which makes it hard to distinguish who’s in the band and who is the ‘star image’ that makes the band recognisable.

STYLE
The digipak is very conceptual and contains a variety of different images that don’t necessarily connect or link with other parts of the CD. Most of the images use strange colours and shapes which makes them very hard to make out what they are. This is very stereotypical for an indie band as many other bands such as Alt-J use a similar technique.

ICONOGRAPHY
There are no iconic elements other than the bands logo that stand out. For example, the X on the front of the CD cover, as well as on the insert and CD itself is easily recognisable for the band. The fact that The XX has used their logo to allow people to identify the album is very stereotypical of an indie band, which is what they are. Many indie bands such as The 1975 with the rectangle, Arctic Monkeys with the AM, The National with the N and so on. It’s very stereotypical for an indie band to use their own designed logo to sell their album whereas pop or R&B artists use themselves.

SETTING
There is no specific setting or location taken for the albums front cover as it just a basic design with little or no colour. For example, as I previously stated about the only use of a logo on the front, that’s exactly what The XX has done, they've used a basic layout, monochrome colours and simple font. Even though there are no vivid colours, shapes or characters on the front cover that is actually eye catching and draws in attention, because it’s so simple and easy, it actually does bring in attention as people wouldn’t usually expect to see it.
